The import of her message is to underscore the importance of dream or vision in the life of a person. Martin Luther King Jr. is noted as the proponent of “I have a Dream”. This followed his consistent struggle to end racial discrimination in United States of America. A battle he fought tenaciously to free the world.

ROAD TO 2030: ERADICATING POVERTY AND ACHIEVING SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT THROUGH READING AMONGST THE YOUTHS.

In 1998 a United Nations (UN) resolution proclaiming August 12th as International Youth Day was adopted during the World Conference of Ministers Responsible for Youth. In 1999, UN General Assembly further endorsed the recommendation. On 12th August 2000, the first International Youth Day was celebrated. This celebration has continued every 12th August till date. The declaration of International Youth Day and subsequent celebrations were to create an avenue for World Youth mobilization and sensitization by countries and her institutions to become better persons in the society including wealth in creation. These sensitization spanning in areas including education, socio-economic, employment issues etc are supported by governments, civil society groups, organizations, individuals, communities at local level, national and at international levels.

The future hope of the world is in the hands of mentored and motivated youths. Presently, many countries of the world are witnessing lots of anti-social vices amongst the youths. These anti-social vices prevalent amongst the world youths include internalization of wrong values which retards societal development. The need to curb them as to improve the society; politically, educationally, socially, economically, technologically is a challenge that must be surmounted via influencing the world youths.

Role of Parents: Parents have great influence in the lives of their children. Many who have realized their worth and potentials attested to the facts that their parents were highly instrumental. C Maxwell; an internationally recognized leadership expert, speaker and author in his book the 21 Irrefutable Laws of Leadership stated that several years ago while teaching leadership to a group of people in Denver U.S.A., he noticed the activities of a nineteen year old named Brian, who he said he spoke to and encouraged him thus “Brian, I’ve been watching you here”, “I said, “and I’m impressed with how hungry you are to learn and glean and grow. First Wednesday of October every year is celebrated as World Reading Day. The World Reading Day was declared to raise the consciousness of the people about the importance of reading to the society and to individual self development. The declaration of the world reading day is to encourage all people the world over to appreciate reading as a veritable instrument of societal development.

Francis Bacon the French writer says “Reading makes a man”. Francis Bacon is not alone in advocating reading as a way of achieving greatness. Others who have also understood the power of reading after deep reflection includes Abraham Lincoln; former President of United States of America who said “The things I want to know are in the books… thus my best friend is the man who will give me books I have not read.
