On Thursday 8th September 2016, the world marked the International Literacy Day. The decision to celebrate International Literacy Day was taken by UNESCO on 7th November, 1965.

Thus on 8th September 1966 the first International Literacy Day was celebrated. The theme of 2016 International Literacy Day is Reading the Past, Writing the future. This year’s celebration is another effort by UNESCO to create the consciousness between literacy and sustainability leading to societal development. This celebration is to further emphasize the great importance of literacy to individuals and society especially the past five decades of marking this laudable literacy celebration.
